The Oxford Harmonic Society is a mixed voice choral society, based in Oxford, England with about 150 members. The choir usually gives three concerts each year in November, April and June of major works in either the historic Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford or at the Oxford Town Hall. Occasionally, the summer concert is presented outside Oxford in places like the beautiful Dorchester Abbey.
Robert Secret is the choir’s conductor, and David Langdon is the accompanist. The choir performs with the professional Orchestra of Stowe Opera, and with professional solo singers.
New singers are very welcome, and can sing at rehearsals for some weeks before deciding whether to become a full member. Students and young singers can become members at a much reduced annual subscription. Rehearsals take place from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Tuesday evenings at the Oxford High School for Girls on Belbroughton Road, off the Banbury Road. A call to any of the people listed on the Contacts page will provide more information. There is a simple audition, when a new singer feels ready, to check that the singer can sing in tune and to determine to which voice section the member should belong. There is no sight reading test.
Scores can usually be bought or hired from the choir librarian.
